Chairman Emeritus Reconnect 36 – “Cosmic Sound & Shape”

My dear friends,

Have you ever wondered what the Sun would sound like if you could hear it?

Our Sun lies 93,000,000 miles away, surrounded by the vacuum of space. Sound won’t travel through but with the right instruments, scientists can “hear” pulsations from the Sun. The entire Sun vibrates from a complex pattern of acoustical waves, much like a bell.

If you google out “Sound of the Sun”, you will find researches done predominantly by:

  1. University of Sheffield
  2. Stanford University
  3. NASA

At University of Sheffield

Astronomers at the University of Sheffield have managed to record for the first time the musical harmonies produced by the magnetic field in the outer atmosphere of the sun. They found that huge magnetic loops that have been observed coiling away from the outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere, known as coronal loops, vibrate like strings on a musical instrument.

Using satellite images of these loops, which can be over 60,000 miles long, the scientists were able to recreate the sound by turning the visible vibrations into noises and speeding up the frequency so that it is audible to the human ear. Solar physics research group at Sheffield University, said: “It was strangely beautiful and exciting to hear these noises for the first time from such a large and powerful source.

At Stanford University

Likewise, astronomers at Stanford University could record acoustical pressure waves in the Sun by carefully tracking movements on the Sun’s surface. To do this, they used an instrument called a Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI), mounted on the SOHO spacecraft, circling the Sun 1,000,000 miles from Earth.

The Sun’s acoustical waves bounce from one side of the Sun to the other in about two hours, causing the Sun’s surface to oscillate, or wiggle up and down. The Sun’s sound waves are normally at frequencies too low for the human ear to hear. To be able to hear them, the scientists sped up the waves 42,000 times — and compressed 40 days of vibrations into a few seconds. What you’ll be hearing are just a few dozen of the 10 million resonances echoing inside the Sun.

NASA has recorded the actual sound of the sun in deep space and compressed the inaudible waves so that human ears can hear it. If we listen to this sound, we can hear and feel a deep vibration.

The sound of the sun recorded by NASA is precisely as the ancient Hindus had described it in the Vedas thousands of years ago. Scientists were stunned to hear the sound akin to Vedic Sound “Om” exactly the way we pronounce-short “O” and long “M”. This mantra has not only been praised in our Vedas but other epics also.

The real surprise was the deep sound which man cannot hear through his ears, how could our rishis listen?  A common man can hear sounds only between 20 MHz to 20,000 MHz. This is the capacity of our ears. Beyond this range, neither downwards nor upwards, it is impossible for us to capture the sound waves. The sound of the sun is beyond our frequency range.

Rishi’s proclaimed that this sound can be realized during meditation but can’t be heard through the ears. This sound also represents energy of Shiva which is echoing in the inner most depth of our consciousness. When we recite OM our mind gets rid of thoughts and the frequency of our recital gets synchronized with the sound echoing in the universe. Then the Meditator goes deep into the meditation reaching the state of oneness or Samadhi, mind getting dissolved in the consciousness according to Shri Surakshit Goswami.

“The sound of the sun was considered by most ancient religions as the most sacred sound of the cosmos. Scientists’ real surprise was the miracle of the high state of “Samadhi” in which they could capture this sound and prefix it before every mantra. According to them this is Maha-mantra to reach the Supreme Soul. Maharshi Patanjli says “Om” is the name of God. Incidentally in Bhagwat Geeta Krishna tells Arjuna “the knowledge of Yoga which I am giving you, I had given it to the Sun in the past and since then Sun is shining pronouncing the same sound.

Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who becomes seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that there is a spirit manifest in the laws of the universe — a spirit vastly superior to that of man.” This spirit is consciousness. The universe is alive and we are part of it. We are all part of a unified consciousness that works together.

Om is an ancient mantra and mystical sound of Hindu origin (India and Nepal), which is considered sacred and significant in various religions like:

and Jainism.

Hindus believe that all the divine and other creation form of consciousness originated from the vibration manifesting as sound “OM”. Even in Christianity and Islam, similar sounds Amen and Ameen are considered sacred.

In Vedas and other Hindu scriptures, Om is the ‘Sound of the Sun’ and the ‘Sound of Light’. In a theory known as the Harmony of the Spheres, even Pythagoras proposed that the Sun, Moon and planets all emit their own unique orbital resonance depending on their orbital revolution.

According to Gayatri Mantra, Om is worshiped as the supreme reality that pervades earth, interspace and heavens, coming out of the worshipful and adored Lord Sun that shines as the light of consciousness in the intellect, burns away ignorance and illumines the intellect with the wisdom of the Highest Truth.

The Cosmos, comprising Trillions of stars clustered in over 100 billion galaxies of which our Sun is a tiny part, is oval shaped. The shape could be caused by a magnetic field that pervades the entire cosmos. Scientists have concluded this based on data gathered by a NASA satellite known as the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) designed to scan the sky.

In Solar system also all the planets are orbiting the Sun in an ellipsoidal shape. This shape also resembles with that of the egg which is an essential component of the generation process of birds. From Egg to Cosmos (अडं से ब्रह्मांतक) it is concomitant.

According to Indian belief, the ultimate reality is totally balanced and harmonized without any polarization and is therefore represented by a perfect mathematical figure, the sphere. Sphere, as we know, is a flawless mathematical figure which appears alike when viewed from any angle whatsoever.

It is a mathematical fact that when focal point of a sphere is divided into two poles, an ellipsoid is formed. Similarly, when the ultimate reality (Brahma) divides itself into two poles representing consciousness (Shiva) and energy (Shakti),   a Shiva Lingam is formed which represents the root of all cosmic creation. In fact, when we bow before the Lingam we can clearly see the two that created the universe i.e. father and mother of all cosmic creation – Shiva and Shakti as the two poles.

This being so it follows naturally, that if we can focus all our consciousness and energy within, divinity would generate proving the truth ‘Aham Brahmāsmi ’ ( अहं ब्रह्म अस्मि ).

Satyamev Jayate !!!
